Disc Golf is Returning to Oceanside
That’s right – you heard it right, disc golf is on its way back to Oceanside, and to a ball

golf course at that. Oceanside’s Center City Golf Course, known affectionately as “Goat Hill”, will be the new home of 18 holes of disc golf sometime soon, possibly as soon as March 1st. That would be 11 months after the removal of baskets from Emerald Isle. They say nature abhors a vacuum – I guess that’s also true for disc golf.
The Goat Hill Golf Course property is well suited for disc golf – rolling hilly terrain framed by large eucalyptus trees, and close-cropped grass perfect for skip shots and rollers. And disc golfers who played Emerald Isle will remember the steady winds from the west that kicked up every afternoon, which will add to the challenge of this new course. Local disc golfer and avid ball golfer Todd Wickersham is credited with selling the Center City management on the idea off adding disc golf – he has been playing ball golf on the course for many years. Todd has also done the initial design work on the Goat Hill disc golf layout, and his knowledge of the property shows. Aces Board members Jeff Nichols and Allen Risley recently toured Goat Hill with Wickersham and City of Oceanside staffers and left with good vibes and high hopes for what will soon be the newest course in town.
Details for disc golf at Center City are still being worked out, but a few things are already known. Greens fees to play the course will be around $4-$5 per round, with carts available for an additional fee. There is no water on the course, but the layout will be long – bring your Bosses, Nukes and Katanas. The plan is to schedule specific times for disc golf play – there will not be disc golfers and ball golfers playing simultaneously. Center City has a modest pro shop stocking beverages and sandwiches, and may soon have golf discs as well. There are plans to hold a “grand opening” PDGA-sanctioned tournament soon after the initial soft opening, but the specifics of this event have yet to be determined.
So just be patient for a few weeks as the final preparations for this new course are being completed. Watch this space for announcements on the opening of the course and registration for the upcoming tournament. Use the time to work on your long-distance rollers and flex air shots – you’ll need them. You’ll also need pinpoint accuracy around the baskets, because there are several SVO-style “pin of death” opportunities out on the course. This goat will have a mean kick.

Aces Membership Barbecue – Feb. 5th
The San Diego Aces Disc Golf Club will hold the first Member Barbecue of 2011 on Saturday, Feb. 5th at Morley Field. If you haven’t renewed your membership for 2011, this event will be the time to do it. A new shipment of membership discs will be arriving just in time for the barbeque, so attendees will have a great choice of disc weights and colors. Member discs for 2011 include Innova Champion Destroyers, Orcs and TeeBirds, along with KC Pro Aviars.
The barbeque will run from 11am to 2pm and will be held at the picnic area near Morley Field hole #8. There will be burgers and hot dogs available for members (a small donation is appreciated), and a variety of disc golf skill games that you can play for prizes. If you’re playing in the pro monthly tournament that day you’ll still be able to grab some chow between rounds.
After the barbeque (approx. 2pm) the Aces will hold a bag tag melee – a great chance for those with new bag tags to compete for one of the coveted black tags (numbers 1 through 10). Come out and join in on the pre-Superbowl fun!

2011 Aces Election Results
The San Diego Aces held their annual election of board members recently, with on-line voting taking place Dec. 12th through 17th, and in-person voting taking place on Dec. 18 & 19. Amendment #1 clarified procedures for filling vacant board positions, and was passed by a vote of 68 Yes and 2 No. Amendment #2 added language describing grounds for removal of a board member, including lack of attendance at board meetings, and passed with a vote of 64 Yes and 6 No. Amendment #3 modified several passages in the bylaws, establishing an Executive Board made up of the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and Membership Director and made these the only elected board positions. Amendment #3 passed 53 Yes to 13 No votes.
Results for the candidate voting are as follows below, in order of number of votes:

Those interested in being considered for a Course Representative position should contact Jeff Nichols at jeffnichols@cox.net. The tie for 5th place between Dan Lichtman and Ryan Meyer means that both candidates will be allowed to attend the board selection meeting. Top vote-getter Jeff Nichols is currently working on setting up that meeting.
It’s On!! North vs. South Challenge This Weekend
Coming to a disc golf course near you this weekend: the 3rd installation in the San Diego Aces North vs. South Challenge. This is the last competitive event of the year on the San Diego disc golf calendar, and in previous years it has turned out to be a fun and exciting weekend of disc golf for those involved, either playing or spectating. San Diego’s version of the Mason/Dixon line is somewhere around the 56 freeway, and 20 golfers from above will meet 20 from below in a series of match-play rounds played on four different courses – 2 North, 2 South (of course).
Team Captains Daniel “Big D” Lichtman for the South and A.J. Risley for the North have put together their teams through a process of open challenges and cash under the table, coming up with rosters of players who meet three important criteria: 1) play great disc golf, 2) live in the correct region, and 3) have nothing better to do the weekend before Christmas but drive all over the county to play disc golf. And from the looks of the rosters, they have found just that. So far the trash-talking has been rather mild, but come Saturday you can expect all stops to be pulled out, as each team of plastic-aholics does their best to defend their honor on their own home turf.
The format of the event goes like this: on each day two matches will be played, one singles and one doubles. Saturday’s rounds will be played at Morley Field (singles) and Sun Valley (doubles), with Sunday’s rounds being played at Kit Carson Park (doubles) and Montiel Park (singles). Each team consists of 5 “Open” players, 2 Women’s division players, one “Master” (over age 40) and 12 “Amateurs”. Match-ups will be determined by the team captains, who will do their best to pit players of similar skill level against one another. Each round played will be 18 holes, scored in match play style, where the score is determined by the number of holes won outright by a player or team. The North vs. South championship will be determined by combining all of those Won-Lost-Tied outcomes.
The schedule for the weekend is as follows:
Saturday, December 18th:
- Morley Field (Singles) 8:30am tee-off, shotgun start. Players must check in by 8:00am.
- Sun Valley Golf Course (Doubles) 1:00pm 1st tee time. All matches start on Tee #1, there will be tee times assigned.
Sunday, December 19th:
- Kit Carson Park (Doubles) 8:30am tee-off, shotgun start. players must check in by 8:00am.
- Montiel Park (Singles) 1:00pm tee-off, shotgun start.
- North Victory/South Consolation celebration (Stone Brewing?) immediately afterwards.
Two other important events are happening in conjunction with the North/South Challenge. Voting for the 2011 San Diego Aces Board will be going on, withthe ballot box following the matches around the county. If you have not been able to vote online, you can do so at each of the courses listed above, while the match is being played at that course (If you want to vote online, e-mail rizbee@teamrizbee.com to arrange that). Also, 2011 membership sign-ups for the Aces will be available at all four locations. New club discs (Innova Champion Destroyers, Orcs, TeeBirds and KCPro Aviars) and new 2011 bagtags will be available.

Southwestern Team Championship This Weekend
Morley Field will be the site of the 30th Annual Southwestern Team Disc Golf Championship, played Saturday Dec. 4th and Sunday Dec. 5th. This unique event pits teams from eight different disc golf communities in the Southwestern U.S. in a round-robin, match play tournament. This year teams from the following locations will be participating: Huntington Beach, Oak Grove (Pasadena), Sylmar, Santa Cruz, Redwood Empire, Arizona and two teams from San Diego.
Teams are made up of 12 players, including Open Men, Masters (age 40+) Men, Grandmaster (50+) Men and Open Women. The San Diego #1 team is made up of Micah Dorius, Carlo Pelg, Josh Dameron, Angel Garcia, Mike Brown, Dave Devine, Mike Slonim, John Heaton, Paul Morgavo, Jeff Nichols, Snapper Pierson and Kayleen Boyle. San Diego’s #2 team consists of George Spracklen, Cody Kirkland, Mike Lust, Kevin Gomez, Luke Christensen, Mike Ramos, Dan Shorkey, Mike Westerman, Dean Porter, Randy Wylot, Phil Ganshert and Emily Hardy. Several world-class players will be coming in from out of town, including former World Champion Avery Jenkins (Santa Cruz), Steve Rico (Sylmar), Paul Ulibarri (Arizona) and Paul McBeth (Huntington Beach).
Morley Field will be closed to regular play most of the day Saturday and Sunday morning until about 1pm. But this is a great opportunity to see some of the best disc golfers in the world play our most popular local course. See you there!
It’s Election Time!
The San Diego Aces Disc Golf Club is governed by a board made up of nine members: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Membership Director and four Course Representatives. The board makes decisions and sets policy on a wide variety of issues related to the sport of disc golf in San Diego, including organizing and purchasing membership packages, disc golf course development, tournament sponsorship, running tournaments and other competitions, information dissemination and organizing social activities. The 2010 Board of Directors has been quite active in the following ways:
- Successfully grew club membership to over 350 members.
- Donated $2,500 towards sponsorship of the Cal State San Marcos Disc Golf Course, becoming the lead sponsor.
- Provided financial support and work parties to install the Escondido Rotary Club Disc Golf Course at Kit Carson Park.
- Purchased the baskets and tee pads from Emerald Isle Golf Course, for use in future San Diego County courses (some tee pads are already in use at Kit Carson park and Sun Valley).
- Organized and ran five PDGA-sanctioned tournaments: San Marcos Ice Bowl, Salt Creek Ice Bowl, EIEIO, Kit Carson Grand Opening, California State Championships.
- Sponsored and provided staffing for several other significant PDGA events: Sun Valley Open, Morley Spring Fling, CSUSM First Gentleman’s Open.
- Ran weekly doubles leagues at Kit Carson Park and Montiel Park.
- Provided ongoing repair and maintenance services to courses at Kit Carson Park, Montiel Park, Sunset Park and CSUSM.
- Developed and launched a revised web site, Facebook page and Twitter feed to deliver information to the membership and public.
- Applied for tax-exempt, non-profit (501c3) status with the federal government.
At the end of each year the San Diego Aces Disc Golf Club elects board members to serve for the next calendar year. The election for 2011 board members will be held both on-line and in person, just as it was for the 2010 board. The on-line vote will be held December 4th through 17th, with links to the ballot sent out via e-mail to addresses listed by members on their membership forms. The on-line ballot will be security-enabled, so each e-mailed link can only be used once. For those members who are unable to or decide not to vote on-line, a ballot box will be available on the weekend of December 18th and 19th, in conjunction with the annual North vs. South team competition. The ballot box will follow the competition as it moves between the four courses used in the challenge: Morley Field, Sun Valley, Kit Carson Park and Montiel Park. A schedule for the North vs. South Challenge will be posted on the Aces web site in the near future.
Nominations are now open for election to the 2011 Board of Directors and will close on November 28, 2010. Members can self-nominate or be nominated by another member by contacting Aces Vice President Randy Wylot at: wylot@sbcglobal.net. Nominees run in a general election for the board, not for specific positions. Top vote-getters meet after the election to determine which offices they will hold. Nominees are encouraged to submit a candidate statement or bio of no more than 200 words, which will be posted on the Aces web site before the election and linked to from the ballot. This year’s ballot is also expected to contain amendments to the club’s bylaws. At the time of posting, the amendments were still in the process of being finalized by the Board. The ballot will also inlude a link to a member survey.
The current board encourages any and all members with an interest in serving the disc golf community to seek nomination to the board. More people pulling together will help grow the sport that much quicker – “Thoughts Become Things”!
First Gentleman’s Open a Big Success
Many thanks to all of the players, donors and volunteers who helped make the First Gentleman’s Disc Golf Open a great success. The final fundraising figures will be released at a later date, but you would be hard pressed to see more smiles and happy faces at a disc golf tournament than there were at Cal State San Marcos yesterday. Everybody left a winner – either because they played well or because they left knowing they had done something to help a great group of students – the ACE Scholars.
–
ACE Scholars Services at Cal State San Marcos works with former foster youth – kids who have “aged out” of the state foster care system when they turn 18. ACE helps these young people get into college, succeed in school, learn to live independently and become successful college graduates and adults. Saturday’s collaboration of disc golf and a worthwhile charitable cause was the inspiration of Jim Mickelson, Director of ACE Scholars Services. Jim is also the spouse of CSUSM President Karen Haynes, and has therefore picked up the moniker of “First Gentleman” of CSUSM. He lent that title to the tournament, and played the part of host very well.
–
The day started out rough – the band of rain that had been hanging out over the ocean decided to hit the McMahan House around 6:45am, just as the tournament supplies were being unloaded and the course was being prepped. As the players arrived, everyone huddled indoors, warily viewing the dark skies above. Unfortunately, our new player clinic and putting contest were rained out. A few participants even made quick trips across the street to CVS or Ralphs to purchase umbrellas to use while playing.
–
But then a magical thing happened. Just as the final scorecards was passed out to send groups out on to the course, the rain stopped. And it didn’t return. Fifty players headed out under cloudy skies that gradually opened up to a beautiful, sunny day – perfect for a round of disc golf. Parts of the course were quite muddy and a few teepads were slick, but the course played fair and the clear skies provided some great views of surrounding San Marcos and the Discovery Valley.
There was definitely some good disc golf being played. San Diego Aces President Jeff Nichols demonstrated the skill and steadiness that typify his game, taking the Grand Championship and winning the Open division with a two-round score of 86 (24 under par). Jeff started Saturday one stroke behind Deano Porter and was 2 under after the first six holes on Saturday, but then strung together twelve consecutive birdies on the shorter upper holes at CSUSM for a five shot victory over A.J. Risley and Jim Herrick.
–
In the Men’s Intermediate division, Alex Lawn also won with a five stroke margin, over Scott Bowers and Burbank’s Mike Bass. In the Men’s Recreational division, Scott Dickson – PDGA #84 – won in a sudden-death CTP shootout over Armando Lopez of Off-Axis Designs. Scott and Armando played a special CTP shot from atop the hill next to the McMahan House Conference Center down to basket #8, with Scott edging out Armando. Michael Shaw and Vince Fox tied for third, one shot behind. Rachelle Lopez was the lone “experienced” female disc golfer to play on Saturday, carding a 65 that would have made her very competitive among the Men’s division.
–
There was a large contingent of first-time disc golfers on hand as well. Playing in the Men’s and Ladies’ “Philanthropist” divisions, these folks came out to support the great work being done by ACE Scholars Services at CSU San Marcos and to try out the game of disc golf. Charlie Arnold won the Men’s flight, skillfully applying mulligans on his way to a score of 56. Steven Ferriera was second with a 58 and CSUSM Alumni Association President and first-time disc golfer Ken Green finished third at 59. Second-time disc golfer and avid ball-golfer Sherryl Schwanhausser edged out Shari Leonard by one throw in the Ladies division, 81 to 82. Sherryl remarked that she has now played in two charity disc golf events (she’s an Ice Bowl veteran), and both have had rain – she has challenged the disc golfers to provide dry weather in the future. And in the competition for “most fun” (read, “most strokes”) Arthur Salazar and Pat Benson carried home bottles of Advil and muscle-relieving bath salts, to go with their big smiles.
–
After the round of golf was over, players were treated to a tasty catered lunch at the McMahan House Conference Center under clear skies. A selection of tasty beers from local Stone Brewing was available for 19th-hole embellishment as well. A silent auction was part of the festivities, with prizes such as trips for two to San Francisco, lunch with CSUSM’s President Haynes or Escondido’s Mayor Lori Holt-Pfeiler, or a 1-hour airplane flight with San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond going to the highest bidder.
–
After lunch, First Gentleman Jim Mickelson made a moving presentation to the crowd, describing the difficulties faced by the ACE Scholars students and foster children in general. Jim closed by expressing his appreciation to the assembled players and guests for their participation and generosity. CSUSM President Karen Haynes also delivered a few words of welcome to those who had not visited the CSUSM campus before, as well as an invitation for them to return, either to play disc golf, see another on-campus event, or take a class. The morning wrapped up with the awards presentation, and participants were left with the rest of a beautiful day to reflect on the fun they had experienced, and the good cause they had supported.
–
Many disc golfers expressed their pleasure with the the First Gentleman’s Open – some saying that it was the best they had ever been treated at a disc golf tournament. Keep your eyes open on the course for the blue-on-blue golf shirts with the distinctive “First Gentleman” logo that were part of the player pack. Big thanks should go to Monica Watkins, of Watkins Synergized Solutions, who arranged and managed the event, translating the First Gentleman’s vision into a day full of fun and rewarding service for all who attended.
