Kit Carson Construction Update
As the opening of the Kit Carson Disc Golf Course grows near, quite a few people have been asking about the status of the course construction. Well, all 18 holes already have at least one basket anchor in the ground, plus each tee has a concrete anchor poured and ready to accept the tee signs. Fortunately, most of the course is in areas with nice cut grass with very little brush clearing needed. Both practice baskets were left in the ground, so if you are in the area feel free to stop by and throw a few practice shots at them.
Last Saturday close to 20 Aces members showed up to perform some of the “grunt work” that was still needed, mostly on Hole 2, the one area of the course that was in need of some significant brush clearing. Due to the hard work of those in attendance, Hole 2 will be ready for play when the course is opened. The Aces thank all who showed up and chipped in.
Afterwards, most of the workers grabbed their discs and a couple of portable baskets and were rewarded with a tour of the course, getting a head start on “dialing in” the holes on this challenging layout.
Another work party is being planned for April 10, as there is still a lot of work to do. Remaining work includes planting of trees and shrubs, leveling tee areas, installing safety and warning signs, building the kiosk and various other odds and ends. Look for reminders of the April 10 work party on the Aces web site, the Aces PDGA discussion forum or other disc golf communications sites.
The Aces strongly encourage you to come out and be a part of this project. From the Aces perspective, this course will be unique in that we will have control over it and the events held there. That means no city fees, no competition with ball golfers, no asking permission to schedule weeklies, monthlies, team tournaments, whatever. It is quite an exciting milestone for our club. Come out and claim a bigger stake in it as others already have.
The Kit Carson course is scheduled to open on April 25th with a Grand opening PDGA sanctioned one-day tournament scheduled for May 8. Look for an announcement for online registration in early April.

Salt Creek Disc Golf Ice Bowl
San Marcos Ice Bowl a Huge Success!
The 3rd Annual San Marcos Ice Bowl was held on Saturday, February 13th at Montiel Park in San Marcos, under decidedly un-icy weather conditions: a high of 75 degrees and sunny skies all day. Fifty-two disc golfers joined in to compete and raise funds for The Angel’s Depot – a Vista non-profit that provides “Senior Emergency Food Packages” to local senior citizens in need. The Aces surpassed this year’s fundraising goal, collecting over $1,100 and a few hundred pounds of canned food for The Angel’s Depot.
The competition was close – lots of good golf and strategic use of mulligans led to some low scores. Highlights of the day included Deano Porter’s ace of #5 in round 1, Eddie Lopez’s ace on #1 in the second round – which was his frst ace ever, and Patrick Paramore’s aces on #2 in the first round and #1 in the second round – his first tournament aces and good enough to win the portable Innova basket. Luke Christensen shot a blistering 37 in the first round and cruised to victory in the Men’s Open division. Other division winners were (Aces members in bold):
Men’s Advanced – Danny Zwolenski
Women’s Advanced – Laurie Stroh
Men’s Intermediate – Nick Newton
Women’s Intermediate – Liz Rousseau
Men’s Recreational – Mike Henry
Juniors – Sam Maury-Holmes

Danny Z also took away the prize for the most canned food donated, so he had a pretty good day. Josh U’ren continued his winning Ice Bowl ways – last year he won the Innova basket for getting an ace, this year he won Disc Golf Bingo. And the winner of the prize for the lowest PDGA number in attendance was not #100 John Kirkland – though he was sure it would be – but instead Scott Dickson took the prize with PDGA #84.
Many volunteers helped out to make the tournament a success:
Monica Watkins, co-TD and logistician extraordinaire;
Brian Bobka, helped all day long in many ways;
Michelle Chambless, Ben Rutherford and Michael Shaw, helped with player check-in;
Nick Newton, helped transport all of the tables and chairs to and from Jack’s Pond Park;
A.J. Risley, ran the putting contest and provided a few “special” prizes;
Nate Carter, supplied the sound system; and
Ryan Meyer, helped with check-in, scorekeeping and schleping tables and chairs back to Jack’s Pond.
The Aces will be back at Montiel Park in two weeks for our first “Couples” Disc Golf Tournament to benefit The Angel’s Depot. This will be an excellent chance to bring a “significant other” who isn’t a regular disc golfer, or to introduce some friends to the game. There will be Ice Bowl discs for all players and more great opportunity drawing prizes, including more stuff from Stone Brewing. Please contact Allen Risley at rizbee@teamrizbee.com for more information.

Kit Carson Park To Get New Disc Golf Course!
– from the San Diego Union Tribune Feb 6 2010 –
ESCONDIDO — Disc golf, a sport that’s played with a Frisbee-like disc, is coming to Escondido’s Kit Carson Park.
The City Council this week agreed to let the San Diego Aces Disc Golf Club install and maintain an 18-hole disc golf course on the northern end of the park near the amphitheater, with Bear Valley Parkway as its eastern boundary.
Ryan Meyer, a San Diego Aces representative, said his club chose Escondido because no disc golf courses exist in the city and because the north end of Kit Carson Park is underused, unlike the south end, where families like to picnic near the ballfields.
“This is one of the fastest-growing sports right now, and it’s inexpensive. You can spend $10 on a disc and play,” Meyer said. “It’s not as frustrating as golf — you don’t have your whole life savings invested in tools. You’re just out there having a good time.”
Disc golf, however, isn’t just about whipping a disc over treetops and hoping it lands in the chained nets that are the equivalent of the hole on the green.
“The challenge is in the flight of the disc,” Meyer said. “We carry different discs in our bags just as you would golf clubs. We have over-stable discs, under-stable discs, stable discs. They turn differently. It has to do with your release point.
“People get attached to disc golf because when you throw a disc and see it flying, you almost feel a portion of yourself flying; you feel a connection. It’s almost spiritual for some.”
Meyer said his nonprofit club spent three years working with the city and sponsors, and received a donation from the Escondido Rotary Club to install the $17,000 course next month. He expects a grand opening April 27, and the first tournament May 1.
The public, which will play free except in tournaments, should be able to use the course beginning May 2.
Escondido Boy Scout Troop 649 will build a small pedestrian bridge near Hole 1 to provide a crossing over a creek, Meyer said.
“It’s a sport that the whole family can play, young and old,” he said.
Sun Valley Melee – Tomorrow!
Sorry for the late notice San Diego Aces members, but tomorrow Sun Valley will be holding a bagtag challenge with tee times starting 1:00pm. Please arrive no later than 12:45 to check in. Remember this is a staggered tee time event, you may NOT enter the course until your given tee time. It will be two rounds of 9 holes with different tee locations for the second round. Membership signup and packages will be available before the event. Hope to see you out there because who really watches the Pro Bowl anyways????

It’s Ice Bowl Season in San Diego!
The San Diego Aces will once again be sponsoring two Ice Bowl disc golf tournaments in 2010, with the 3rd Annual San Marcos Ice Bowl set for Saturday, February 13th and the San Diego Aces Ice Bowl at Salt Creek scheduled for Sunday, February 21st. Ice Bowl tournaments have been held for over 20 years across the U.S. during the first two months of the year, with the emphasis on fun and fellowship. Ice Bowls are always charity events, with a focus on feeding the hungry. The Angel’s Depot, an organization that provides “emergency food packages” for local seniors is the charity for the San Marcos Ice Bowl, while the Salt Creek Ice Bowl will benefit the San Diego Food Bank.
The San Marcos Ice Bowl is PDGA-sanctioned, and will consist of 27 holes at Montiel Park in San Marcos. The entry fee of $20 and five cans of food gets you a tournament-stamped disc (Star Classic Rocs or Star Makos), an Ice Bowl mini, and three combination mulligan/raffle tickets. CTP’s, a free basket for a hole-in-one, a putting contest, Disc Golf Bingo and over twenty raffle prizes will be part of the fun. Last year’s tournament maxed out with 54 players and raised over $500 for The Angel’s Depot and the Open division champion (Nikko Locastro) went on to win the United States Disc Golf Championship later that year.
More information about the San Marcos Ice Bowl, including an entry form, can be found at: http://teamrizbee.com/icebowl2010.htm.
Current registration for the tournament and some smack talk can be found at: http://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/3rd_Annual_San_Marcos_Ice_Bowl_2010.
Even more smack talk can be found at: http://www.pdga.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=32923.
Details for the Salt Creek Ice Bowl are still being finalized, but one thing that is known is that it will be played on a brand new disc golf layout on the grounds of the Salt Creek Golf Course in Chula Vista. Contact Aces Vice President Randy Wylot at wylot@sbcglobal.net for more details.
Both the San Marcos and Salt Creek Ice Bowls are part of the Golden Sombrero Series – a collection of five Ice Bowl Tournaments (including Chavez Ridge, Redlands and Palm Desert) that have joined together to crown a champion. Points are awarded for each player you beat in a tournament, with your best three tournament point totals counting towards the championship. A Discatcher Traveller portable basket will be awarded to the series champion, and there will be raffle prizes given to participants from all five events. The Golden Sombrero will be awarded at the Salt Creek Ice Bowl, once play has concluded.
Don’t wait until the day of to sign up, as these events will sell out!
San Diego Aces Bag Tag Challenge – Montiel Park 1/10/10
It was another beautiful day in paradise on Sunday at the Challenge. With 46 players showing up for a full round of golf, there was a full women’s card with 6, and 40 men. It was warm enough to run out of water and wish that you had brought a second bottle. Chris Vilmorin led the way with a -12, and Allison Wylot for the women with a -3. There were plenty of dogs (4 legged at the dog park and the hot variety on the grill) and burgers awaiting us after the round. There was a memorial picnic for Daniel, who disc golf lost in 2009, and his friends and family shared cake (for his upcoming birthday) with the golfers. Jeff gave an update on the exciting new courses going in around town and a good time was had by all.
