San Marcos Ace Race on Saturday (details here)
The 5th Annual San Marcos Ace Race will be held this Saturday, October 13th at Montiel Park in San Marcos. The event is sold out, with 150 players pre-registered. If you’re pre-registered, we will start check-in at 8:30am, handing out player packs (2 discs, water bottle, sunglasses, mini). We will hold a player’s meeting at 9:45, or sooner if the check-in line for pre-registered players empties. After the player’s meeting (around 10am) play begins. Some details:
– You can make you own groups – no more than 8 players, so as not to block the flow of play.
– Only throw tee shots, one per hole. Just because you have 2 discs does NOT mean you can throw two tee shots to finish faster. That’s cheating.
– Only count aces and metal hits – skips, rolls, slides into the base count.
– Play your 36 holes straight through or at your own pace. You just have to finish by 3:30pm so we can give out prizes.
– We will have a Mini Ace Race – $1 to play 9 holes. Rules are the same as the Ace Race. The winner splits the cash pot with our charity (EDGE).
– We will have a separate hole-in-one contest. $1 for two throws, 1st prize is a DGA Mach III basket.
– We will be bringing in pizza and drinks – yours for a small donation.
Oops!!! I didn’t pre-register! Can I still play?
The event is sold out. We don’t have a waitlist, but here’s what you can do:
Show up on Saturday AFTER we have had a chance to check in all of the pre-paid players. Once that line is empty, we can start registering walk-up players. Since we won’t have a players pack for you, you will need to find a pre-paid player who is willing to let you borrow one of their (2) Ace Race discs. The only way you can participate is if you have an official Ace Race disc to use. We will register you for the regular fee ($25), order your player pack on Monday and give you the player pack once they are shipped to us.
We expect to start signing in walk-up players around 10:30, which will be after the pre-registered players have had their player’s meeting and can start playing. When the pre-registered players check in, we will let them know that there are players who want to use their extra disc, so you shouldn’t have to explain the whole thing to them.
Please don’t show up early to ask us if we can sign you up. We have a lot of work to do to check in 150 pre-registered players and set up the course, so we don’t have time to deal with that until we get everyone checked in and started playing.
There will not be enough parking in the parking lot at Montiel Park. Your best bets are to carpool, and to park a few blocks away from the park at the Coles/Turner Outdoors parking lot or Gateway Church. We will be bringing in pizza (for a donation) at lunchtime and will have water and gatorade.
Brengle Terrace and Kit Carson DGC Closures This Weekend
Both the Brengle Terrace Park and Kit Carson Park disc golf courses will be closed to public use this upcoming Friday through Sunday, Sept. 21-23 for the North County Cup tournament. The tournament is being played on both courses Saturday and Sunday, so no casual or league play will be allowed. On Friday, the courses will be open for tournament practice at a fee of $3/day for a single course or $5/day for both courses, with the proceeds going to the tournament’s professional player prize payout.
This weekend would be a good opportunity for players who aren’t in this tournament to make use of the other disc golf options in the area – try playing a course you’ve never played or reacquaint yourself with an old friend. Just don’t stop flinging plastic!
Aces Welcome Players to Brengle Terrace (But We Have 2 Holes to Finish!)
First things first: The Aces have a deadline of October 1st to complete the last two holes of the Brengle Terrace Park Disc Golf Course. The city of Vista has the right to sever the agreement with the club and require the course to be removed, if these holes are not completed. The will be a work party this Saturday, September 15th starting at 8:00am and lasting most of the day. Meeting place will be the parking lot in front of the Rec Center. If you have chainsaws, tree saws, lopers, etc., please bring them.
On Saturday, Sept. 8th the San Diego Aces hosted a grand opening round of golf at the new Brengle Terrace Park Disc Golf Course. 75 players converged on the new course to give it it’s first major run-through, and the reviews were great. Aces Vice President Randy Wylot had organized the event, and put together a fun day for those who participated. Randy had assembled a full team of volunteers to staff the event, which was one reason it ran so smoothly: Jeff Nichols prepped the golf course and set up two temporary holes for a full round of 18; Allen Risley handled the scorecards and tee assignments; Tony Buck distributed the very cool event discs (donated by Legacy Discs); Mark Verrochi and A.J. Risley organized the giant bag tag challenge; Nate Carter provided cool tunes through his sound system; Max Nichols put on a great putting clinic and Marc Jarvis wowed the crowd with a distance throwing clinic. Local disc golf vendors SDSF and Kinetic were also on hand, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Once everyone was checked in, Randy made a brief presentation, recognizing all of the Aces board members in attendance, as well as former board members Ryan Myers and T.J. Cruz, who were instrumental in getting the new course approved by the city. After a quick group picture, players headed out to challenge the new course. The event was a great success, especially as a fundraiser – $1,753 were raised to cover installation expenses for the course.

Highlights from the August Board Meeting
On the second Monday of each month, the San Diego Aces board meets to take care of club business and work on ways to promote disc golf in San Diego County. The executive board members and course reps are unpaid volunteers, receiving no compensation or perks for the work that they provide. Some of you may wonder from time what the board is up to, so here are a few highlights from last night’s board meeting:
- President Jeff Nichols reported on the status of the Brengle Terrace Park disc golf course. 16 holes are completed, with two holes yet to be finished. These holes must be finished and all signage installed before the October 1 deadline set by the City of Vista. Much more volunteer help is needed.
- Vice President Randy Wylot reported on the fundraising effort for Brengle Terrace. 9 $500 tee sign sponsorships have been sold and 6 of the 30 $100 kiosk sponsorships have been sold. These funds will be used to reimburse the club for construction expenses.
- A grand opening event will be held at Brengle Terrace on Saturday, Sept 8th. One round of golf (with a bagtag challenge for Aces members), a ring of fire and prize raffle. $20 donation required to participate, with all proceeds going towards construction costs. All participants will get a commemorative disc donated by Legacy Discs. Signups will be on DiscGolfU.com.
- Membership Director Mark Verrochi reported that the Aces were now up to 595 members! Morley Course Rep Donny Olow pushed that number over 600 with the new membership forms and payments he turned in at the meeting.
- The Sun Valley Open is coming up on August 25-26. The Aces are providing support to TD David Parnell as he puts on another great event. The Aces are providing the 9 baskets that expand the course from 9 to 18 holes and have secured 4 additional rubber tee pads (from Bakersfield’s Rocky Brown) for the course. Aces member Greg Olsen has been very busy working on course improvements before the tournament and Course Rep Dan Lichtman held a work party at the course over the weekend.
- Kit Carson Course Rep Tony Buck presented a map with some possible new tee and basket positions for the course.
- San Marcos Course Rep A.J. Risley reported on three items: the upcoming Ace Race at Montiel Park (Oct. 13th), progress on the grant project that will add 40 trees, irrigation and possible concrete tee pads for the back tees at Montiel Park, and the formation of a Disc Golf Team at Cal State San Marcos that will compete for the Southwest College Championship in November.
- Jeff Nichols also mentioned the success of Aces members at last weekend’s Sky High Showdown in Wrightwood: Max Nichols won the Open division, while Aces Secretary and Webmaster Allen Risley won in Advanced Masters.
Brengle Terrace Opening Event Set
There is a San Diego Aces Brengle Terrace Grand Opening event in the works for Saturday Sept. 8th. One round of golf, with a bagtag melee on the side for those who are interested (no need to participate if you don’t have a tag). $25 donation gets you a commemorative disc from Legacy discs. There will a separate prize raffle of donated merchandise. Signups will be on DiscGolfU.com.
Money raised at this event will be used to pay for construction expenses at Brengle Terrace. More details will be posted as they become available.
5th Annual San Marcos Ace Race On The Horizon
Join the San Diego Aces Disc Golf Association on Saturday, October 13th for the 5th Annual San Marcos Ace Race! Last year, 130 players gathered at Montiel Park in San Marcos to try out a new prototype putter (newly named the “Zeppelin”), chasing after those elusive holes-in-one (“aces”). This year, we want 200!!! Or more!!!!!!!!
The Ace Race is a unique disc golf event, where all players use the same disc model to try to score aces. No putting (whew!), just tee shots. You play 36 holes on a shortened layout, conducive to the goal of “the more aces, the merrier”! That means 4 times around
a very special version of the Montiel course – we have some tricks up our sleeves this year… The format is very flexible: you make up your own groups to play with and can throw your 36 holes whenever you want on tourney day, as long as you’re done by 3:45pm (so we can add up scores and give out prizes). And scoring is unique!: all you count are aces and “metal hits” (hitting any part of the basket, on the fly, skipping or rolling). It’s a great way to play your first tournament (or 200th).
Discraft sets the entry fee at $25. Every Ace Race around the country (world?) is supposed to charge the same amount. And what do you get for your $25? A lot! 2 Z-plastic prototype discs (yet unnamed), a full-color mini Ultrastar, an aluminum water bottle, a pair of sunglasses and a Discraft sticker. This year’s disc is described as:
“a long range driver, but it could be more accurately described as a hybrid driver…Faster than a Buzzz but slower than a Stalker, the disc offers players controlled fairway shots. At medium to fast speeds this disc will hold the line to finish with a slight hyzer.”
The Grand Prize for the player with the most aces has not been announced yet, but last year it was a new golf bag filled with eight new Discraft golf discs.
We run the Ace Race as a fundraiser for EDGE (Educational Disc Golf Experience), a group that promotes disc golf in K-12 schools. We raised $800 last year and hope to surpass that this time around. Right now we’re looking for a local school to be the rcipient of the discs, portable baskets and disc golf curriculum that EDGE delivers to schools. Because this event is a fundraiser and not for profit, we ask all players to sign up in advance, so we can order your discs and schwag. Don’t expect to sign up on Ace Race Day!
This year, as in past years, we plan to have some extra optional competitions. For $1, you can buy into the Ace Pot, which is paid out to all of the players who get aces. Buy more $1 shares to get a larger chunk of the payout. We’ll also have the ever-popular mini Ace Race (one round for $1, play as often as you like, cash to the winner), and a separate hole-in-one contest (2 throws for $1) with the prize being a DGA Mach-3 basket.
Registration for the Ace Race is now available at DiscGolfU.com. Sign up today!! For more information, contact our Ace Race team at aceracesanmarcos@yahoo.com.
Another Brengle Terrace Update
BRENGLE TERRACE NEWS
Dear Aces Members,
To all those who have responded and come out to work at Brengle Terrace Park, we offer a sincere thank you. On July 7 we had a great turnout of hard working Aces members and accomplished enough to give a glowing progress report to the City of Vista. They are please with the progress, but we still have more milestones ahead to keep them happy.
More work will be done at Brengle Terrace Park this weekend. We need to top off and compact 6 tees with decomposed granite, install the rest of the tee mats and move the rest of a large pile of loose brush that was cut at prior work parties. That, along with installing some additional signs, will complete our August 6 deadline of completing 16 of the 18 holes.
Also, if possible, we will start clearing brush on the last two holes that need to be completed by October 1. We are counting on getting continued help to keep schedule. So please come out and work a couple hours and reward yourself by playing a round of 16 unique and challenging holes.
In other news, the Moonlight Amphitheatre is hosting their biggest event of the season and parking demands will require us to close holes 18 and 1 at 5 pm on Wednesday through Sunday for the next three weeks. The baskets will be removed or covered with a bag during these times. The city is quite sensitive to the interaction between their Moonlight functions and the disc golf course, so please comply and do not play these holes while they are closed.
Please call me with any questions or comments.

San Diego Aces Disc Golf Association

Help Us Find Sponsors For Brengle Terrace
The Brengle Terrace Disc Golf Course project dodged a significant bullet this week, thanks to the carloads of Aces members who have shown up the past few weeks to help with construction. THANKS to those of you who have been able to help us show the city of Vista that We WANT BRENGLE TERRACE PARK DISC GOLF COURSE!!! We were able to make enough progress to keep the course alive, and we’ll continue to need your help because there’s lots of brush left to be cleared.
But now the project needs another type of help: money.
So far the San Diego Aces have given a significant amount of support to this new course – the former Emerald Isle baskets and teepads (owned by the Aces) and $2,400 in cash to pay for materials. That money has been spent, and about $2,500 more is now needed to pay for more rubber teepads, materials for signs and equipment rental for things like wood chippers and tampers. Installation of the course cannot be completed without these items, and the city of Vista has set more deadlines for these items to be installed. If we don’t hit these new deadlines, the course gets pulled.
It was expected that the remainder of the funds needed to pay for construction would come from sponsorships – disc golfers or local businesses buying tee sign sponsorships or plaques for the kiosk at the first hole. Those sales have been very slow, which is why we need your help. Aces Vice President Randy Wylot has volunteered to coordinate the fundraising effort, but he can’t do it alone. If you would like to be a sponsor of this great new disc golf or know of a business that would like to be a sponsor, please contact Randy by e-mail: wylot@sbcglobal.net.
As it stands right now, the Aces Board voted at its July meeting to spend the necessary funds to finish the course. But the money that the board pledged is needed to purchase membership discs and bagtags at the end of the year for 2013. If we don’t find sponsors for Brengle Terrace the club won’t be able to pre-order lots of discs and tags like we have in previous years. So…if you want 2013 membership discs and tags in December or January, help us find sponsors!
Thanks for helping us grow disc golf in San Diego County!
