Colina Park Welcomes Ice Bowlers

January 5, 2016

2016-01-03 16.30.58Fifty-five players helped feed their hungry neighbors while playing disc golf on Sunday at the Colina Park Ice Bowl.  Held at the well-manicured Colina Park Golf Course in City Heights (San Diego) under partly-cloudy skies (63°), the 2nd Annual Colina Park Ice Bowl was a great success.  The gathering of disc golfers helped to raise $850 for the San Diego Food Bank, a significant increase from last year’s event.

The competition was fierce, as players battled the tricky Colina Park layout, with the help of a few mulligans.  There was a limit of 13 mulligans per player for this event, so golfers had to be strategic in their use.  Former Golden Sombrero Champion A.J. Risley came out on top in the Men’s Open/Intermediate division shooting an 18-under par 36, when second-place finisher Carl Renda (38) finally ran out of mulligans with five holes to play.  Daniel Flores (39), Aubrey Daniels (41) and Chad Nichter (41) rounded out the top five in that division.

The Men’s Intermediate/Recreational division was won by Joey Roberts, with a score of 41 (13-under par), one shot better than Bobby Martin (42) and Javi Vargas (42).  Frank Granillo, Jerry Jones and Zach Carman were only one shot behind them at 43.  Joey also cleaned up during the prize raffle, winning a couple of prizes provided by event sponsor Innova-Champion Discs.

The Holiman family was well-represented, with Shalon Holiman (61) winning the Ladies’ division while brother Austin Holiman (52) took the Juniors title.

Richard Ayers was one of the raffle-baggers on hand, walking away with a one-month pass to Morley Field and a gift certificate to the SDSF Pro Shop.  But the big raffle winner was David Neria, who won the event’s top raffle prize – a Discmania portable basket.

Many thanks go out to the event sponsors, who helped this group of disc golfers raise funds for the San Diego Food BankInnova Champion Discs, Disc Golf Values, SDSF, Morley Field and the Colina Park Golf Course/Pro Kids Academy.  You can join in the fun at the next event on the Golden Sombrero Series of Ice Bowls, being held Saturday, January 9th at Prado Regional Park in Chino, or at upcoming events at the Sycuan Golf Resort and Montiel Park in San Marcos.
