Goal: 18 Holes at Brengle Terrace
Brengle Terrace Update: Baskets 12 & 13 have been re-installed and are ready for play (thank you Randy Wylot). There is still fencing in place to keep park users out of the areas where habitat restoration is in process. Disc golfers are asked to do their best to stay out of these areas. The city will be cutting a few entry points in the fencing, so please do not crawl over the fencing. The fencing will probably be in place for the next few years (perhaps as long as 4-5 years).
Holes 14 & 15 will be relocated during the remainder of the habitat restoration project. The Aces board is working with the City of Vista and Kinetic Disc Golf to get the relocated holes designed and installed. The board will vote on the relocation at next week’s meeting. Our goal is to get the relocated holes installed ASAP, and in time for the upcoming Kinetic tournament on Sept. 14/15.

Hole 18 at Kit Carson park will be closed from 7am to 5pm Monday through Friday this week (6/17 – 6/21) as the Boy Scouts work on their archery skills. Please skip that hole, we don’t want to see any discs get impaled by arrows.
Who Plays Disc Golf?
Do you know these disc golfers?
Do you ever wonder how many people play disc golf on our local courses? Some days, when you’re waiting in line behind two or three other groups to tee off, it seems like millions. The number is more likely in the thousands or tens of thousands, but we really don’t know how many people play. Those of us who have sat down to talk with city and county parks officials are asked this question pretty much every time we talk to them about adding a new disc golf course on their park land. My answer to them is much different today than it was when I installed my first disc golf course in Tallahassee, FL back in 1984. But the answer is still a guess.
So here’s a possible solution, one that we’re calling Who Plays Disc Golf?™ Day. The San Diego Aces have chosen Saturday, June 15th as the day to count how many people play disc golf. We plan to have volunteers on hand at each of the public disc golf courses in San Diego County, all day long, to meet and greet (and count) all of the people who play disc golf that day. Volunteers will be stationed at a particular hole at each course to count the number of people who play that hole. We’ll have information available about disc golf, our local courses, where to buy discs and our upcoming events. We may also have some prizes to give out to those who pass through. Players will also be asked to answer a few anonymous questions, and pose for a picture if they’d like. We will take the information and photos we collect and post them on our web site (www.sandiegoaces.com), so the public (and public officials) can see just how many people play this great game.
Of course, we could use some help. That’s where you come in! If you would like to volunteer a few hours to help out at one of our courses, please contact an Aces board member, or post a comment on this page or our Facebook page (or email rizbee@teamrizbee.com). Volunteers will all get a custom-stamped disc with the Who Plays Disc Golf?™ logo, and we’re working on getting lunch (or breakfast, or dinner) donated for our volunteers. Having information on how many people play disc golf will help us demonstrate to the power-brokers that we need more courses in San Diego County!
Brengle Terrace Holes Closed
Holes 12 through 15 at the Brengle Terrace Park disc golf course will be closed until further notice as the City of Vista works on a development project. The city has received a grant to extent the walking trail that previously ended near tee 15. The trail is being extended eastward along Vale Terrace Dr. Part of the trail project is to remove all non-native species vegetation from that area, which includes several large trees. It is unsafe for park users to be in the work zone, and several baskets were in areas where large trees could fall and damage them. Players are being directed to skip from hole 11 to hole 16 during the project.
It’s almost Cinco de Goat-o!
Cinco de Mayo falls on a weekend this year, this Sunday, May 5th. And if you want to play some disc golf on Cinco de Mayo, the best place to do it will be at Goat Hill in Oceanside (trust us, Kit Carson and Brengle Terrace will be nearly unplayable because of picnickers). The Challenge @ Goat Hill returns for it’s third year, and this year the date was moved earlier to the weekend of May 4-5. This will be the first time that Goat Hill has hosted a 2-day disc golf event and it will be a big one. 80-100 players are expected, and sign-ups are still available on DiscGolfU.com.
One bit of bad news: no carts. Goat Hill currently does not have enough carts to assure all players of having a cart and PDGA rules state that if all players can’t have a cart, no one can have a cart. But there’s more than enough good things to outweigh that. One round per day allows time for side events. After Saturday’s round there will be a separate cash doubles round, with bring-your-own partner rules. There will be three divisions, based on PDGA player rating (under 1800 combined, 1800-1899 combined, 1900 and over combined). After awards are handed out on Sunday will be the return of the Voodoo Disc Golf Final 4 Challenge – 4 Pros, 4 raffle winners, 4 holes, 4 $100 skins. And the raffle winners also get a prize from Voodoo Disc Golf.

Spring Flinging in San Diego!
This weekend, April 20/21 will be a busy disc golf weekend in San Diego. Saturday brings the Morley Spring Fling tournament to Morley Field – an Am-only, PDGA-sanctioned, SoCal series event. The course will be closed all day Saturday for the tournament. It’s a fantastic event – Snapper always goes all out with the payout and food – the MA1 winner always walks away with a portable basket.
Sunday’s action will be at Kit Carson Park in Escondido. A full field of 80 players will contest the Pro version of the Spring Fling on a stretched out layout. 27 Open Pros will be on hand, including current World Champion Paul McBeth (yeah, the guy with the signature Roc3 and McPro Aviar). Another 27 players have signed up for the “trophy only” option, giving them a chance to measure their skills against the top guns. Spectators are welcome….no, encouraged. There will be a big prize raffle at the end of the day with over 30 prizes, including a portable DGA Mach 5 basket, a portable Innova Traveller basket and lots of discs, shirts and other stuff. There will also be a disc swap/trade going on during lunch and after the 2nd round – bring something tradeworthy and see what others have to swap.
Sun Valley Monthly Returns March 10
Last month’s monthly at Sun Valley went so well they want to do it again! Aaron van Matre and Dan Lichtman are the forces behind getting these events going, so give them your support and thanks. Two rounds will be played, entry fees are pretty reasonable ($15 + greens fee for Open, less for other divisions). Remember that Daylight Savings Time starts on Sunday, so the listed start time will feel an hour earlier than the clock says.

Sycuan Ice Bowl on Saturday!
The Golden Sombrero Series of Ice Bowls returns to San Diego County on Saturday, El Cajon to be exact. The 2013 Sycuan Ice Bowl will be the second such event held on the Olive Glen Disc Golf Course at Sycuan Golf and Tennis Resort.

Two rounds of 18 holes will be played, utilizing both of the course’s sets of tees. Check in begins at 8:30 AM and the players meeting will be at 9:30 AM. Your $20 entry fee includes a custom designed Ice Bowl Disc (disc guaranteed to first 45 signups). Additionally, every player will receive one free mulligan/raffle ticket just for signing up.

All money raised (and food collected) at this event will go to the San Diego Food Bank. Extra mulligans (do-overs) are available for $1 each and can be pre-purchased or purchased before/during your rounds. Mulligans will also be given away to every person that brings canned goods with them to the event (more food = more free mulligans). There will also be a putting contest at the end of the day for a chance to win some prizes (prizes TBD).
This is the second Ice Bowl at Sycuan. This tournament is part of the Golden Sombrero Series held in Southern California. Other events include Ford Park in Redlands, Montiel Park in San Marcos, Chavez Ridge in Los Angeles, Yucaipa Regional Park in Yucaipa, Mountain Pride Park in Murietta, Sky High in Wrightwood, and Mission Bay in San Diego. Participants earn points for every player that they beat, with your top three points events counting toward the series total. Each year the series champion is awarded a portable basket and the golden sombrero.

Ice Bowl Season 2013 is Here!
For the past several years, a group of SoCal TDs have banded together to kick off the new disc golf year with events aimed at providing a combination of fun, philanthropy and good-natured competition. The Golden Sombrero Winter Series is a collection of SoCal Ice Bowls that helps players ease into the new competitive season while raising funds for local charities that feed the hungry. Ice Bowls were established about 25 years ago in the nation’s heartland, where ice, snow and cold weather are commonplace. The idea behind the events was to have disc golfers get together and play in crappy weather, when they normally wouldn’t. The slogan of “No Wimps, No Whiners” was coined early on, as was the idea that these events should be used as fundraisers to help support local charities that feed the hungry.
The Golden Sombrero Series is now in its 6th season. What started in 2008 with three events (Redlands, San Marcos, Palm Desert) has continued to grow, with seven events, 293 players and over $8,000 raised for charity in 2012. 2013 has the potential for being even bigger with another new venue added to the schedule (Murrieta). An important part of the Golden Sombrero Series has continued to be the race for the overall points series championship. At each of the Golden Sombrero events, players are awarded points for each player that they beat. Similar to the SoCal Series, each player’s top 3 point totals are then combined for their Golden Sombrero points total. The player with the highest point total at the end of the series wins he annual trophy – a gold-painted and decorated sombrero, suitable for wearing or display. Past winners have also received a portable basket from Innova. Four-time series champion A.J. Risley will be back to defend his title in 2013.
Each of these Ice Bowls is an independent event, with some being PDGA-sanctioned and some not. Some events sell mulligans to raise funds for charity, so the winning player is not always the best thrower, but may be the one who has the best mulligan strategy (or budget). Because of their charity function, Ice Bowls generally don’t have big prize payouts for top finishers, but the raffles are usually quite generous. But without question these are fun events and one important way for disc golfers to give back to their local communities. The cities whose parks host Ice Bowls are very happy to have their disc golf courses be used for charity events.
