Saying Goodbye to Donny Olow
Disc golf in San Diego lost one of it’s most-loved players last week with the passing of Donny Olow (PDGA #2656). For over 30 years, Donny was a fixture at Morley Field – throwing aces, telling stories and helping to build a disc golf community. He was well-known and loved across the disc golf landscape – Morley Field, San Diego, SoCal (SoCal member #008) and across the U.S. Donny was a respected competitive disc golfer, playing in many major tournaments including the PDGA World Championships and U.S. Masters and was a past winner of the Morley Field Course Championship and San Diego Spring Fling. He was a founding member and served one term as President of the San Diego Aces Disc Golf Club, and served as Morley Field Course Representative for several years.
If you want to get an idea of how Donny touched the lives of others, go check out his Facebook page. There you will find countless expressions of affection and remembrance, along with many personal stories from his disc golf friends. Feel free to add your thoughts to the page and share with others. If the worth of a man is to be judged by the friendships he has formed and the joy he has spread, Donny Olow was a rich man indeed.
At the time of this writing, no details regarding memorial services are available, but representatives from the S.D. Aces have been in contact with Donny’s family and we will do our best to keep disc golfers informed. In the meantime, the club will be collecting signatures on a few S.D. Aces discs to be presented to his family and used for a memorial. The discs will be available in conjunction with the Aces’ bag tag events and election being held this Saturday (Dec. 19) at Kit Carson Park and Sunday (Dec. 20) at Morley Field (near hole #8). Both events will be from 10am-4pm.
