Aces Race at Ace Race!
Well, the 5th Annual San Marcos Ace Race is in the books. A record-setting 165 players took part in the event, held again this year at Montiel Park in San Marcos. One thing, though, that was different this year – the course was played backwards! Over 120 players had checked in and got their player packs by 9:30am, so something almost unheard of in disc golf occurred…the players meeting started 5 minutes early! Reviews of the new prototype disc were very positive – it’s kind of a midrange/fairway driver hybrid, very much like the DGA Squall. Yes…very, very, very much like the Squall.
It was quite a site to see well over a hundred players on the course at the same time, and it was a rush to hear the ooohs, aaaahs, groans and shouts of Metal!!! across the course. And every so often, you heard the type of cry that only accompanies an ace. Twenty-six times, to be exact.
Matt Howard of El Cajon ended up walking away with the first prize – a golf bag full of discs from Discraft. Matt had been tied at 2 Aces and 2 Metal hits by Chris Beecher, but when 4 o’clock rolled around Chris had left for the day. Matt also took home $100 from the Ace Pot, as his $10 buy-in times 2 Aces gave him twenty of the $5 shares. Any fans who had wanted a playoff still got one, as there were three players tied in the contest to take home a new DGA full-size basket. After a CTP contest on hole #1, Chris Hanna edged out Kevin Christie and David Phillips to take home the basket. Jason Weidmann won $20 in the Mini Ace Race contest, with 2 Aces and 3 Metal hits on 9 holes of mini-golf.
The Ace Race was a big success for our charity, EDGE. Between the player pack sales, and donations for Gatorade and pizza, we cleared $1,000 for EDGE. Look for that money to help bring disc golf discs and baskets to a local school in the near future.

If you bought ace shares then hit and ace and went home early, you can pick up your cash from me this Saturday at Kit Carson Park at the last doubles of the year (just before 9 AM).
If you registered to play on the Day of the event, your discs have been ordered. Approximate shipping and handling time is 3-4 weeks. I will contact each of you when they arrive.

Nice! Was a lot of fun. How would one go about collecting their ace buy-in shares if they couldn’t stay til the end?
