New Course Preview!!!
The bad news? No doubles at Kit Carson this Saturday because of a cross-country race.
The good news? Aces board member Mark Verrochi has put together a field trip for Aces members to the new Olive Glen Disc Golf Course at Sycuan Golf and Tennis Resort! This Saturday (9/10/2011) at 10am, Sycuan will open up their new 9-hole course for a mini-tournament put together by the Aces. A $5 entry fee gets you an 18-hole look at the new course (maybe 9 short tees/9 long tees?), with prizes for the best 3 scores. And I wouldn’t bet against there being a bagtag melee as well…
The Olive Glen course is set, as you might guess, in the middle of an old olive grove. The holes are shortish, as the course was set up for kid’s camps and recreational disc golf by resort guests, but word from a few Aces who have had an early look is that it rewards accurate, straight shots down the rows of trees and punishes wild, errant olive-harvesting shots. San Diego Aces Disc Golf Club 
I tried this course out today. You pay at the resort room/hotel check in desk (hairpin right turn at resort entrance) which is not far from the course and then drive to the farthest guest rooms and follow a small “Disc Golf” sign to park on the dirt in the far corner near the main road, which is next to hole #1. It’s $5 to play. If you park near the adjacent resort hotel room area and walk over, that works too. You can’t miss the old olive grove. There’s a ball golf practice area there too. One of the baskets sits above the ball golf sand trap. These old trees love to eat your thumbers. Luckily there was a 20+ ft PVC pipe around for getting them back. Piles of wood chips don’t make the best tees, but it is mostly shorter holes and accurate/finesse shot making. I like that they have planted grass fairways and installed sprinklers and filled areas with wood chips. There’s a natural grove floor of dried olive leaves too. I really liked being the only one out there on a Sunday afternoon. It’s a nice start and a very cool spot for a course. Between Sun Valley and this new course, East County now has 18 diverse holes. Here’s what I hope they/we can do in the future:
1) Make #1 much longer. 2 is par otherwise.
2) Concrete or compressed DG topped with synthetic grass tees. (firm and durable, especially for the bigger throws) Otherwise the natural grove floor is good, except for the new sprinklers softening it up. The wood chips are high and dry for now.
3) Add longer/second tee options for advanced and beginner players and “18-holes with 9 baskets” concept.
4) Install multiple permanent pipes in the ground for holding baskets at each hole for regular rotation to add course variety.
Perhaps some grass roots volunteerism and pro advice will make this a popular course that can help keep weekend crowds down at Morley Slow Play Mob Field.
I already have 3 aces at this course and a handful of muligan aces. Obviously I’ve been there a few times now. Definetly a short course but not boring in the least. I would like to see some improvements there such as concrete pads. Any chance of needing a course rep? Or anything I can do to help advance this close to home course? Please let me know
I had a lot of fun playing the course. I only needed a putter a mid-range and my over hander disc. Lots of birdies and aces to be found on the course. Tons of shade along every hole made for a very pleasant day. $5 for all day, $30 for the month. You can park right next to hole 1 and hole 9. I hope there’s an Ace Race there in 2012. It’s a great course for beginners because it’s shorter but still offers some technical shots and possible aces for advanced players for competing. It’s a fun way to practice the short game. Most holes are between 170′ to 230′.
Also, is this exclusive to Aces members? If we aren’t a member, when are we allowed to play this course? What is the fee going to be on a regular basis?
This event is not exclusive to Aces members. But it’s a great opportunity to join once you’re there!
Any chance to get an approximation of how long the holes are?

The course is designed for recreational play. All nine holes have two sets of tee boxes with lengths ranging from 175 feet to 300 feet. Most of the holes are roughly 250 feet. One tee box is located at about 400 feet. I would say that most (experienced) players could complete just about all the hole positions with a midrange or putter.
