Bag Tag Rules

Have fun and follow the rules and spirit of disc golf.  The purpose of the Bag Tag is to add another fun element to personal, league, and tournament rounds of disc golf. Please display your Bag Tag where others can easily see it.

Getting Startedtag1
Join the San Diego Aces Disc Golf Association to receive a Bag Tag (supplies limited).

The Goal
Your goal is to have the lowest numbered Bag Tag possible and have fun along the way.

Rules of Engagement
1. Members who “posses a current Bag Tag in hand” may issue/schedule/participate in challenge(s).
2. Any member with a higher Bag Tag number may challenge any player with a lower Bag Tag number to a round of disc golf.
3. Members cannot avoid challenges by leaving the Bag Tag at home or by concealing your Bag Tag (see forfeiture).
4. Challenges may be made in person, by telephone or e-mail. When a challenge via telephone or e-mail has been accepted, neither player can participate in Casual challenges until the agreed upon match has taken place.
5. The player receiving the challenge can choose the course to be played AND must make a “fair and reasonable” effort to be available within 2 weeks.
6. If the challenger cannot agree to a reasonable time or date for the match within the coming week, the challenge is void and both players may look for new challenges.
7. Once the challenge has been agreed upon, any changes must be agreed upon otherwise a forfeiture may occur.
8. If the challenger has the lowest score for the round, the tags must be exchanged immediately following the round.
9. Challenges are on a round-by-round basis; i.e. challenges are for one round only in a multiple round event.

Automatic Challenges (AC)
•    Automatic challenge during any League, Tournament, or Casual/Recreational rounds, if any SDA Bag Tag holder(s) are on your card (in group).
•    The challenge does not need to be publicly announced or agreed upon before the start of the round–it is automatic!
•    Members may not deny this challenge.

Casual Round Challenges (CRC)
SDA members may casually meet at a course OR agree to meet at a course/time to compete for bag tags in:
•    Head-to-Head (me vs. you) challenges.
•    Group Challenges, where multiple players each put a Bag Tag at stake during the group round.
•    Members may not deny a challenge and then proceed to play a round (see forfeiture).

Proximity & Distance Challenges (PDC)– Event, League or, Tournament Play
SDA members “competing in” (proximity) a coordinated Disc Golf event (official or casual) may agree beforehand to compete for Bag Tags while playing in separate cards/groups/divisions (distance), for a given round.
Example: “Let’s see who shoots a lower score in Round 1.”

Exception:
Any Automatic Challenges take precedence over any challenge from another card. You must settle with your current card first.

Relief & Award:
If a member is eligible for an Auto-Challenge AND shoots a better score than the tag holder in the AC round, but is denied his/her new tag due to claims of a “Distance” challenge he/she may claim the tag s/he is owed from any of the distance-competitors.

Wins, Ties, and Exchanges

Q: How do I win?
A: The player with the lowest score at the end of the challenge round earns the lowest numbered Bag Tag among the challengers.

Q: I won, when do I receive my winning Bag Tag?
A: Bag Tags must be exchanged immediately following the round.

Q: What happens if we have a tie?
A: In the event of a tie, the player who started with the lowest numbered Bag Tag will be awarded the lowest numbered Bag Tag. This may require some sorting in a group challenge.

Rematches
Challengers who have just won, may, but do not have to accept/schedule a rematch challenge from a player that the s/he just beaten unless one of the following occurs:
1.    Either player completes another, separate challenge.
2.    One week has passes.,
Whichever comes first.

Exception:
Rematches are overridden by automatic challenges that occur during a subsequent round of a multi-round event.

Eligible Tags
Members may only challenge members who posses the SDA Bag Tag; no other Bag Tags are eligible to participate in challenges. You must have your Bag Tag with you to challenge or accept challenges.

Forfeiture
Each Bag Tag belongs to the entire club membership and should be accessible to all club members.  Any club member will be required to surrender his/her Bag Tag if:
•    He/She is found to be purposely concealing the Bag Tag, especially with a low number.
•    Refusing and/or “forgetting” to carry his/her Bag Tag, especially to events where members are “likely” to be present.
•    Refusing Automatic Challenges.
•    Generally denying Bag Tag access to other members (TBD by 2 or more club officers).

If you lose your Bag Tag, please report it immediately.  You may then purchase the next lowest number Bag Tag available. Replacement tags, if available, will cost $5.00.

Rules are subject to change and the SDA Board of Directors will decide all disputes. The SDA Board of Directors reserves the right to revoke your Bag Tag at our discretion.

If I challenge someone to a bag tag match can that person place the match at a tournament? In other words, I challenged someone to a bag tag… he then said okay, he picked the place and time but its the first round of the goathill tournament this sunday morning. Is this legal to do?

That’s a tough question. The rules state that the player being challenged must make a “fair and reasonable” effort to be available for a challenge. That’s going to be interpreted differently by different people, of course.

My take on the spirit of the bag tag rules is that challenges are meant to be taken care of sooner, rather than later. If the tournament is the first time the challenger and challenged can both be at the same place/same time to play, then that makes sense. If however, both players are available at a previous time to play (let’s say they show up at the same course/same time to play a round), then it makes sense that they should play the challenge before the tournament. Dodging challenges when you are physically able to accomodate them, IMO, goes against the spirit of competition that the tags were intended for. Hiding the tag or creating artificial barriers to challenges would also be against the spirit.

So if Goat Hill really is the first time you guys can play, alrighty. But if you both show up at another course before then, ready to play, I think you should play the challenge. That’s my opinion as a founding member and board member.

    Hello all.

I just wanted to express my desire for a weekly, singles bag-tag event in the North County area.

    Reasons:

    1) To decrease the secret nature of tags, who has what number, etc… As it is now, you have to know the ins and outs of people’s locations, contacts, etc to get a bagtag round going.

    2) To provide a singles competition format besides the Goat Hill Monthly. Competitive players need to put on their “singles competition head” as much as possible in order to develop.

    3) To promote the growth of the community, connections….

    4) To make bagtag holders defend their numbers against a larger mass…

    5) And possibly to create a points system, tracking system for final bagtag ( a la Santa Cruz).

    All the best,

    Jamie
