Angel Garcia represents at Am Nationals

June 12, 2011

Each June, top amateur disc golfers from around the U.S. converge on Milford, Michigan with their eyes on a big prize – the U.S. Amateur Disc Golf Championship.  “Am Nats”, the name given to the event by players, is quite a tournament to win, because it means you have conquered “The Tobbogan”, an 8,824 ft., par-62 monster of a course that many call the best in the world.  This year’s winner was Ben Calloway, from Davenport Iowa – a solid player who finished 4th earlier this year at the Bowling Green Amateur mega-tournment.  Calloway fired two 1,000+ and a 999-rated round to win by 2 strokes over a field of 155 other golfers.

But the big news for San Diego disc golf fans is the performance of Aces member Angel Garcia, whose final-round 56 equaled the hot round of the tournament, and moved him up to 4th place, finishing just four shots behind Calloway.  Angel’s 56 allowed him to pass 10 players on the final day of the tournament – no small feat.  And that’s after moving up from a tie for 23rd place after the first round.  Angel adds this great performance to the list of other top finishes he has had this year – winning the Advanced Amateur division at The Memorial in Phoenix and the Green Valley Open in Yucaipa.  Angel is sure to return to San Diego with lots of Discraft Schwag (Discraft is the main sponsor of Am Nats).

Following Angel’s example of charging up the leaderboard, Aces member A.J. Risley also finished strong with a 1002-rated 59, which moved him up 36 spots to 32nd place.   A.J. was 93rd after the 1st round and 68th after the second round, but was able to finish “in the cash”.  Along with fellow Aces Carl Renda and Dale Chambless, he’s now driving home before hitting the road again for the Beaver State Fling in Oregon.

Which local courses have you played?

May 5, 2011
by

OK, so where have you played?  Right now there are seven permanent disc golf courses available for public play here in San Diego County.  We’ve put together this little poll to get an idea of where our members and readers have played – nothing scientific of course, but food for thought.  I think the #1 answer will be pretty easy to predict (it’s been there 30 years, after all), but numbers 2, 3 and 4 might be worth a few bar bets.  Choose all of the courses you have played, but vote only once (this isn’t Chicago, after all) and feel free to forward the poll to your friends.  We’ll get back to you with results next week.

Introducing Disc Golf to the X-Games crowd

May 3, 2011

Representatives of the San Diego Aces recently had the chance to take part in a unique charitable event: the 9th Annual Rob Machado Golf Experience, held at The Crossings Golf Course in Carlsbad.  A resident of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Rob Machado  is one of the world’s best competitive surfers, well-known for his laid-back and fun-loving surfing style.  The Rob Machado Golf Experience is an annual event held to raise money for the Rob Machado Foundation, an organization with a mission of supporting environmental programs and education in Southern California.  This year’s event theme was “Super Heroes” and sure enough, teams of four players each dressed up as their favorite comic book and movie super heroes to take part in this event.  Each of the 30 teams paid $1,400 to participate in the event, with teams made up of pro surfers, X-Games athletes, representatives from sporting goods and apparel manufacturers and other “sporting celebrities”, all in support of the Rob Machado Foundation.

The San Diego Aces were asked to set up a disc golf hole on the golf course as part of this charity event. Imagine you are a golfer (dressed up as Iron Man) and after playing several “regular” golf holes you step up to the next tee to find out you don’t need a club or a ball to complete the hole. Instead, the hole is a disc golf hole and your score is based on the number of throws it takes you to get a “plastic saucer” into that “chain thingy” down the fairway. Well that is just what happened!  Players arrived at Hole 8 to receive instruction from Aces members Randy and Allison Wylot on the basics of throwing disc golf discs before trying out a practice disc golf hole of about 180 feet.  Participants were given Disc Golf Association (DGA) Aftershocks and Innova Aviars to complete the hole.

Aces Ryan Meyer and Greg Olsen drove the super heroes’ carts as they WALKED up the fairway to play their next shot (well, The Flash probably ran).  After finishing the practice basket, Mark Verrochi met them on Hole 8 – a 215 foot par 3 disc golf hole that played up a hill and to the left with a crosswind from left to right.  After some brief instructions, the group played the hole and the lowest score obtained by one of the group members was used as their score for the hole and was included as part of their ACTUAL SCORE for the golf event!

Out of the 120 participants and a few guests, about five of them had previously thrown a disc golf disc.  None of the groups ended the day with birdie on the hole but there were many pars and about 6-8 bogeys.  Innova and DGA donated prizes that were given away to participants that came closest to the basket and to participants who threw the farthest throughout the day, along with mini discs for every participant.

Overall the hole was a great success and nearly everyone enjoyed the opportunity to try out disc golf.  many thanks to Randy Wylot for organizing the Aces’ efforts and to Rob Machado for including disc golf as a part of this wonderful event.

Dorius finishes strong for “World’s Biggest” Goat Hill Monthly win

May 2, 2011
by

Micah Dorius is a professional disc golfer.  I don’t use the term “professional” because he earns enough playing the sport to live and raise a family (which he doesn’t).  I use that term to describe the way the guy plays disc golf – no-nonsense, well-practiced, cool under pressure and classy.  That thought came to mind as we watched him seal the win with an impressive 35-foot sidehill putt just as the sun was setting.  Micah fired a secound-round 55 to catch and pass Carlo Pelg and Derek Robbins on the final 3 holes of the second round for the win in Open, over a field of 19 players.  Carlo and Derek had opened the tournament with an impressive matching pair of 54’s, tying the Goat Hill course record set last month by Philo Braithwaite. Natalie Cook is so far the only Ladies division winner we’ve had at Goat Hill, as she won again this month with back-to-back 67’s. Last month her scores were 67-66…pretty consistent (and impressive) play.  In the 5-player Pro Masters division, “Friz Whiz” John Kirkland outlasted the youngsters in the division, his second-round 59 enough to catch and pass 1st-round leader Deano Porter.  JK did so even after losing his prized Supper Puppy approach disc out on the course in the first round.  If you find and return it there may (I said may) be a reward.

While “playing good disc golf” is not one of the qualifications to become a San Diego Aces Course Representative, the top three players in MA1 on Sunday demonstrated that there is good disc golf karma in volunteering.  Aces Course Reps Daniel Lichtman, Aaron Van Matre and Mark Verrochi finished 1,2,3 in the 17-player MA1 division.   The Aces board is currently looking for a Course Rep for Goat Hill – is that what you need to improve your game?  Finally, popular local golfer Tom Vincent blew away the MA2 field, on a blustery Oceanside afternoon, winning by 9 shots.  There were a few calls of “bagger!” heard during the award presentation.

Fifty-four players enjoyed a very windy, but fun afternoon of disc golf at Goat Hill.  Held as part of the “World’s Biggest Disc Golf Weekend”, the tournament made a donation to EDGE (Educational Disc Golf Experience), following the 25-year spirit of philanthropy of the World’s Biggest series.  The monthlies at Goat Hill are proving to be quite popular, between the great golf course, fun competition and between-round burgers and brats. There was even a beverage cart sighting during the second round. Registration for the June monthly will open up later this week at DiscGolfU.com. Spots will fill fast, and there will not be day-of sign-ups for these events.

Scores and standings for the monthly are now posted on DiscGolfU.com @ http://www.discgolfunited.com/disc-golf-tournaments/tournament-dashboard.cfm/tourn_id/191

Oh, and for the next monthly…there will be new rubber tee pads!

San Diego Disc Golf does Social Media

April 27, 2011

How do you find out about what’s going on in the local disc golf world?  Well, this site, obviously.  And talking to your friends, for sure.  But what else is out there?  Here’s a non-exhaustive, incomplete, somewhat biased list of where you can find disc golf info using some of our popular social media tools.

Facebook – Yes, it’s everywhere…Facebook this, Facebook that.  I know.  But Facebook has some great tools that make communicating about disc golf easier to do.  With a Facebook account you can connect to your friends who play disc golf by “friend-ing” them (and even put them in a group, so they don’t infect your other friends), send messages (and now Facebook e-mail), create calendar events, create groups of people you want to communicate with and then you can “Like” (but not “Dislike”) all of these things.  You can even create advertisements and target certain groups of people to receive those ads (I’ve been doing that to promote tournaments for a while).  Some local disc golf pages from Facebook include ours: San Diego Aces, as well as pages for Kit Carson Park DGC  Morley Field and Montiel Park

Twitter – Do you tweet?  Some of us do, and you can add the San Diego Aces to that list.  @sandiegoacesdgc is our Twitter name and even if you don’t use Twitter, you’ve probably seen our tweets.  That’s because this website allows us to display tweets over in the right margin via a widget, and because the Aces Facebook page can also receive and re-post tweets.  That allows us to quickly update both the web page and Facbook page by simply tweeting once.  It’s twoo!  Other popular disc golf Twitter feeds are @innovadiscgolf, @disc_golf (DGA Discs), @discraftdg and @csusmbdiscgolf (Cal State Monterey Bay, one of the hosts of 2011 Pro Worlds).

Gowalla – What is Gowalla, you ask? Gowalla is a social networking site that uses your smartphone’s GPS location to help you find cool places nearby, and then let you “check in” and leave your electronic mark and comments.  Most restaurants, clubs, stores and points of interest have “spots” on Gowalla, and users collect “stamps” for all the places they check in at as well as “pins” that reflect the number of check-ins or types of places they check in at.  You can friend other Gowalla users and share with them where you have been and your comments about your stop there.  You can even create “trips”, which are collections of Gowalla spots that have a common theme.  There are trips that are are sight-seeing excursions, pub crawls and scavenger hunts.  And now there’s a Gowalla trip to San Diego disc golf courses.

Discgolfers’r’us – One of the earliest disc golf social media sites – definitely one of the first that was set up specifically as a social media tool.  On DG’r’us you can set up a free account with your own home page.  There are discussion boards, picture and video uploads and on-site “clubs” that anyone can set up.  Home pages are also customizeable – if you know a little html programming you can bring in your own apps and widgets.

And of course, there are other ways of communicating that may not be specifically social media sites, but they have communication tools.  PDGA.com is the web site of the Professional Disc Golf Association, and along with their list of upcoming tournaments and their on-line course directory, they host the DISCussion board, a message board that covers a wide varety of disc golf topics.  You have to be a PDGA member to post messages, but anyone can read them.  You can find a fantastic on-line course directory at dgcoursereview.com, along with course reviews and a message board.  This site probably has the best mapping tools for finding disc golf courses. Another site with a full listing of courses is discgolfscene.com.  Discgolfscene allows users to set up profiles and post comments for their friends, and also has pages for each course where you can leave comments and pictures.  Both dgcoursereview and discgolfscene have tools for tournament directors to list upcoming events at a course, and both have tools for you to input your scores and track how well you play individual courses.

This list is by no means complete.  If you know of a web site or smartphone tool that is useful for disc golfers who want to communicate – post a comment!

Aces looking for a Goat Hill Course Rep

April 21, 2011

The San Diego Aces Disc Golf Club Board will be growing soon…by one seat.  With the addition of disc golf baskets at Center City Golf Course at Goat Hill in Oceanside the club is searching for the right person to act as Course Representative for Goat Hill.  Applicants for the position must be prepared to communicate regularly with the management at Goat Hill, interface with local disc golfers who play Goat Hill, and attend monthly board meetings of the San Diego Aces (2nd Monday of each month).

Interested parties should contact Aces Club President Ryan Meyer at ramskemeyer@gmail.com.   Appointment of a Goat Hill Representative will be discussed at the upcoming Aces Board meeting, Monday, May 9th.

Steady Ed Tour Swoops into San Diego

April 20, 2011

Spring has sprung in San Diego and the 2011 Spring Fling brought out great weather and players.  A long standing event, this year’s Spring Fling had some great changes to it: the tournament was a part of the DGA Steady Ed series, had an Open division and was a two day event on two separate courses!  The tournament started Saturday morning at Morley Field as disc golfers lined up to claim their spots in the traditional Amateur Division Spring Fling event hosted by Snapper Pierson.  All 90 event participants received a players pack consisting of a Morley Field dri-fit T-Shirt, a FlashFlight mini disc, minis from DGA , Discovering the World Mini and Innova, a Paragon Disc Golf can coozie, and assorted stickers.

The first round of the tournament was completed on the standard 19 hole layout with baskets in nearly all long positions. Shooting an impressive Round 1 score of 50 (par 57), Max Nichols jumped out to the early lead in the Men’s Advanced Division. In a three way tie for second, only trailing by two strokes were Bobby Oliver, Mario Traba, and Alex Nichols. Max never looked back as he finished the second round shooting an even par (51) and a total of 108 (-7 for the day). Shooting an impressive 47, Glenn Swanson Jr. jumped from 7th after the first round to 2nd place overall. Bobby matched par on his second round to claim third place.

Leading the Advanced Women after the first round was Kimberly Cottrell, with a score of 64, followed by Amber Ivy (66) and Jennifer Unstead (69). Kim repeated her first round score, with another 64 to claim the win. Michelle Chambless shot a 62 in her second round to jump the other two ladies and finish second.  Dan Shorkey jumped into an early lead in the Advanced Masters Division and held on for a two stroke lead over 2nd place Rhett Stroh (107) and 3rd place Dave Butcher (108).  Christian Cullen took down the field in the Advanced Grandmaster Division shooting a 54 and 60 for a total of 114. Rounding out the top three were Glenn Swanson (115) and Spense Stevens (116).

In the intermediate Division, Josh Hesser shot a 54 to take the early lead. However, he struggled during the second round and ended the tournament in a three way tie for 6th place. Patrick Paramore and Carl Whittington tied at 57 at the end of the first round. Pat went on to beat Carl by one stroke to with the division with a total score of 107. Thomas Wheeler finished in third, three strokes behind Carl.  The Recreational and Novice Divisions ended in ties for first place with Kevin Christie besting Jesse Myers in a sudden-death playoff.  James Galloway and Michael Flores tied for first place in the Novice division, and may still be out there playing off the tie….

Each division winner (for divisions greater than 10 people) took home a brand new disc golf basket. Payout to top 40 percent of the field in all divisions consisted of a mix of discs and other schwag. In addition to the tournament, two Ring of Fires took placefor a Mach Lite courtesy of DGAand a disc golf bag.  As a sponsor of the event, the San Diego Aces provided a free entry to Max Nichols into the pro event for having the lowest combined score. A complete list of all the AM scores can be found here: http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/64496.

The Pro players battled it out in the second part of the Spring Fling on Sunday at the Escondido Rotary Club DGC at Kit Carson Park.  Thanks to the help of SD Aces Course Representative and TD, Mark Verrochi, the course layout was extra long and challenging for the competitors.  The wind and heat picked up in the second round, causing some players to struggle while others pushed through the elements.  Micah Dorius didn’t seem fazed by it one bit shooting an impressive -7 and -9, taking first place by 4 strokes!  Tied for second were Steve Wisecup and Steve Valencia at -12, followed by S.D. Aces member Mike Brown at -11.

In the Open Women’s Division, Emina Weaver took down the field shooting a 62 and 68 for a total of 130. Coming in a close second was Kim Cottrell shooting a 131 total with Amber Ivy finishing just 3 strokes right behind her.  The Men’s Masters Division had great competition, with 9 out of the 12 participants within 4 strokes after the first round.  Chris Brophy opening 52 wasn’t enough to win, as Dan Duron, Lawrence Halili, Miker Ramos, and J.J. Johnson squeaking by him to claim the top four spots (in that order).  Also playing in MPM, Bill Maury-Holmes took home the tournament CTP prize on Hole 6 (provided by Parked) with his second round shot that landed nearly under the basket.

The Sunday spotlight goes to the epic battle to the finish in the Grandmasters Division. Randy Wylot had a one stroke lead going into the last hole (Hole 2) after coming back from being down one stroke to John Kirkland after the first round. Deano Porter sat in 3rd, only 2 strokes from the lead. John stepped up to the tee box and threw a beautiful left-handed drive (he is right-handed), which, out of his hand, looked to be a perfect shot to reclaim a portion of the lead. However, the shot clipped a branch and landed in the middle of the fairway short of the basket. Randy threw a safe shot down the fairway and was able to take a three and get the win. Deano threw a great tee shot which landed inside the 10-meter circle and gave him a chance for a second place tie. Unfortunately his putt went off the rim of the basket and fell to the ground and his day ended in third place (with a great combined score of 109).  In the Senior Grandmasters it was all James McDowell. He shot two 63s to take the first place trophy and $165 prize over Bill Richards (132) and Derrick Stockhausen (137).

During lunch a Mach Lite portable disc golf basket was won by Mark Collicott in a ring of fire. Also during lunch, four-year-old xaeLen Nash tried to break the world distance record for his age by throwing for 150 feet. Unfortunately, he came up short but it was a great attempt and fun for all watching to see the little guy throw farther than some of the regulars out on the course.

Throughout the day, a hole-in-one contest was completed for a chance to win three Mach Lite portable disc golf baskets. The three baskets were all set up at about 10 feet apart at a distance of just over 150 feet from the tee box. Contestants bought throws for $1 each or 6 for $5 and had to throw DGA Aftershocks. The first basket was won by Joshua Kettlehake. The second by Aaron Greco. And finally, the last hole in one thrower of the day, Mike Chvojka, took home the third basket by slamming the disc into the center of the chains. joshua was a big winner on the day, also taking home a beautiful green-coated Mach III basket provided by DGA.

Awards and raffle ended the day with many discs and products provided by DGA, SDSF Pro Shop, Parked Disc Golf, Off Axis, and others.  Many thanks go out to those who volunteered to help prior to and during the tournament, including Ryan Meyer, Randy Wylot, A.J. Risley, Michael Chvojka, Eric Raszewski, Kevin Christie, Andrew Mills, Nick Newton, Kyle Becker, Allen Risley, Katie Risley Patrick Paramore, Sam Maury-Holmes, Joel Maury-Holmes, John Bailey, Richard Phillips, and Jeff Nichols.  A complete list of all the Pro scores can be found here: http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/64497.
