It’s Ice Bowl Season in San Diego!
The San Diego Aces will once again be sponsoring two Ice Bowl disc golf tournaments in 2010, with the 3rd Annual San Marcos Ice Bowl set for Saturday, February 13th and the San Diego Aces Ice Bowl at Salt Creek scheduled for Sunday, February 21st. Ice Bowl tournaments have been held for over 20 years across the U.S. during the first two months of the year, with the emphasis on fun and fellowship. Ice Bowls are always charity events, with a focus on feeding the hungry. The Angel’s Depot, an organization that provides “emergency food packages” for local seniors is the charity for the San Marcos Ice Bowl, while the Salt Creek Ice Bowl will benefit the San Diego Food Bank.
The San Marcos Ice Bowl is PDGA-sanctioned, and will consist of 27 holes at Montiel Park in San Marcos. The entry fee of $20 and five cans of food gets you a tournament-stamped disc (Star Classic Rocs or Star Makos), an Ice Bowl mini, and three combination mulligan/raffle tickets. CTP’s, a free basket for a hole-in-one, a putting contest, Disc Golf Bingo and over twenty raffle prizes will be part of the fun. Last year’s tournament maxed out with 54 players and raised over $500 for The Angel’s Depot and the Open division champion (Nikko Locastro) went on to win the United States Disc Golf Championship later that year.

Details for the Salt Creek Ice Bowl are still being finalized, but one thing that is known is that it will be played on a brand new disc golf layout on the grounds of the Salt Creek Golf Course in Chula Vista. Contact Aces Vice President Randy Wylot at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
Both the San Marcos and Salt Creek Ice Bowls are part of the Golden Sombrero Series – a collection of five Ice Bowl Tournaments (including Chavez Ridge, Redlands and Palm Desert) that have joined together to crown a champion. Points are awarded for each player you beat in a tournament, with your best three tournament point totals counting towards the championship. A Discatcher Traveller portable basket will be awarded to the series champion, and there will be raffle prizes given to participants from all five events. The Golden Sombrero will be awarded at the Salt Creek Ice Bowl, once play has concluded.
Don’t wait until the day of to sign up, as these events will sell out!
